Day 10: Leaving the Team a Benched Player

It's remarkable how quiet the world becomes after you've spent so long trying to make sense of noise.

The same wound kept reopening. Different conversations. Different promises. The same ending.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I had accepted a role I never auditioned for a player on the bench, faithfully dressed for a game I was rarely invited to play.

The love was dazzling.

Or maybe the love bombing was.

It arrived like stadium lights flooding a dark field, so bright it blurred the difference between warmth and warning. I mistook the spotlight for the sun. I confused intensity with security.

I believed that if someone could make my heart race that wildly, surely they would one day choose me completely.

But bright light can blind just as easily as darkness can hide.

Eventually, the truth found its voice.

Not in words alone, but in expectations.

Become smaller.

Need less.

Question less.

Accept the bench.

Celebrate the moments you're called into the game, and don't ask why you're always the first one sent back to the sidelines.

I couldn't do it anymore.

The final whistle wasn't blown during an argument. It wasn't slammed shut by anger.

You stood only a few feet away. Once, I would have crossed any room just to breathe you in, believing your scent alone could quiet every fear inside me.

This time, I didn't move as you stood in front of me in the hardware store.

My body already knew what my heart was still negotiating.

It wasn't hesitation.

It was wisdom.

Every cell in me whispered the same sentence:

It's time to leave this team.

Because this wasn't the team I was ever going to win with.

You can love a game and still know when it's rigged.

You can admire the jersey and still refuse to wear it.

You can love someone deeply and finally admit they are asking you to survive instead of thrive.

So today, on Day 10, I don't celebrate silence because it doesn't hurt.

I honor it because it finally sounds like peace.

Sometimes the greatest victory isn't scoring the winning point.

Sometimes it's walking off the field before you forget what it feels like to choose yourself.
